What Defender Oil Strong is

Defender Oil Strong belongs to the group of water-miscible MWF concentrates with a high oil content. When the concentrate is correctly mixed with water, it forms a working emulsion that provides cooling and lubrication in the cutting zone and assists with removal of machining debris from the working area.
Its defining feature is its use where an oil-rich aqueous emulsion is specifically required. High oil content describes the type of product; it does not mean that the fluid will automatically outperform other MWFs in every machining operation. Performance depends on the complete formulation, working concentration, workpiece material, cutting conditions, water quality and the condition of the circulation system.

Defender Oil Strong should not be selected on the principle that “more oil is always better”. It is intended for processes where the technology calls for a water-miscible fluid with a distinctly oil-rich working emulsion. For other machines or cutting conditions, a semi-synthetic, synthetic or neat-oil product may be more appropriate.

When Defender Oil Strong is a suitable choice

• when the plant is technologically oriented toward oil-containing water-miscible emulsions;
• for turning, milling, drilling and other machining operations with recirculating MWF delivery, provided this fluid type is appropriate for the operation;
• when an oil-rich working emulsion is specifically required;
• when replacing another oil-containing water-miscible MWF and a compatibility trial can be performed with the actual plant water and machine system.

When to choose another product

Defender Pro. For heavy-duty machining with recirculating fluid delivery, Defender Pro should be considered as one of the primary options in the product range.
TUV-95. If a traditional oil-containing water-miscible emulsifiable fluid is required, compare Defender Oil Strong with TUV-95. They should not be treated as direct equivalents solely because both contain an oil phase.
Defender Oil 210. For particularly demanding local drilling, deep-hole drilling and thread-cutting operations, the ready-to-use neat cutting oil Defender Oil 210 is the more specialized option.
Defender Ultra M / MasterRez. For regular machining of copper, brass, bronze and other non-ferrous metals, specialized products for these materials should be considered separately.

Applications

Defender Oil Strong is used as a concentrate for preparing an aqueous working emulsion in MWF circulation systems. The operating mode should be selected according to the machining operation, workpiece material, load, cutting speed, machine design and circulation method.
For a new process, a controlled trial on the actual machine is recommended, particularly when the MWF type, water source or workpiece material is being changed at the same time.

Water quality

Water quality affects the stability of the Defender Oil Strong working emulsion, foaming and in-service behaviour. Before preparing the emulsion, water hardness, dissolved salts and mechanical contamination should be taken into account. If water composition is unstable or its quality is uncertain, compatibility should first be checked in a small trial batch.
No universal acceptable water-hardness range has been established for Defender Oil Strong; water selection therefore has to be based on the actual conditions at the plant.

System preparation before filling

Before changing to Defender Oil Strong, assess the condition of the tank, pipelines, filters and circulation zone. Significant residues of the previous MWF, tramp oil, sludge or other contamination can affect the behaviour of the new emulsion.
If the system is contaminated or the previous MWF has an unknown composition, clean and flush the system using the plant’s approved procedure before preparing the fresh working emulsion.

How to prepare the working emulsion

1. Prepare clean water of suitable quality and a clean tank or mixing vessel.
2. Determine the required amount of concentrate for the machining operation.
3. While mixing, gradually add Defender Oil Strong concentrate to the water.
4. Continue mixing until a uniform working emulsion is obtained.
5. Before starting the machine, check the appearance of the emulsion and its behaviour in the circulation system.

Basic mixing rule: add the concentrate to the water, not the water to the concentrate.

Working concentration

The working concentration of Defender Oil Strong is selected for the specific machining operation and load. A single universal numerical concentration is not specified for all operating conditions.
After start-up, concentration should be monitored and corrected according to the actual condition of the working emulsion. For accurate refractometer control, use the refractometer factor established specifically for Defender Oil Strong.

Operation and condition monitoring

During operation, monitor concentration, appearance and stability of the emulsion, foaming, accumulation of chips and sludge, and ingress of tramp oil.
Water or corrective make-up solution should be added only after checking the actual condition and concentration of the emulsion. Repeatedly adding only water or only concentrate without measurement will gradually shift the composition of the working fluid.

Compatibility and limitations

Before using the product in new equipment, check the machine manufacturer’s requirements for MWF type, seal materials, filtration and fluid-delivery system.

• do not mix Defender Oil Strong with MWFs of unknown composition without a prior compatibility check;
• do not treat high oil content as an automatic advantage for every machining operation;
• do not use it as a ready-to-use neat oil — Defender Oil Strong is a concentrate for preparing a water-based emulsion;
• for new materials or unusual operating conditions, run a controlled trial before a full-scale changeover.

Storage and safety

Store Defender Oil Strong in its original tightly closed container in an indoor storage area, protected from moisture and direct light. Shelf life: 12 months.
When preparing and maintaining the working emulsion, follow normal industrial hygiene practices, use appropriate personal protective equipment and comply with the current safety data sheet for the product.

How is Defender Oil Strong different from Defender Pro?
Defender Oil Strong is selected primarily when the process specifically requires a water-miscible MWF with very high oil content. If the main criterion is heavy-duty recirculating machining, compare it separately with Defender Pro.
How is Defender Oil Strong different from TUV-95?
TUV-95 is a traditional oil-containing water-miscible emulsifiable fluid. Defender Oil Strong occupies a separate position as a more oil-rich water-miscible product. The choice should be based on the operation, water and operating conditions, not on oil content alone.
