BIOL ECO Metalworking Fluid (MWF)

What is BIOL ECO

BIOL ECO is a synthetic MWF concentrate that is diluted with water before use.
The product was developed as a metalworking fluid with increased attention to environmental requirements. One of its formulation features is the absence of sulfur- and chlorine-containing additives.
The “ECO” designation does not mean that the concentrate or working solution should be regarded as absolutely safe. The applicable safety documentation and normal industrial hygiene requirements must be followed during preparation, use and disposal.

This lubricant-coolant fluid is also available in a winter version, namely Cutting fluid Biol-ECO-ZIMA. To clarify, designed to work in unheated shops. Withstands temperatures down to -20C.

Main characteristics

Type Synthetic water-miscible metalworking fluid (MWF)
Supply form Concentrate
Recommended working concentration 3-5%
Sulfur- and chlorine-containing additives Not used
Application Metal machining
Machined materials Steels, cast iron, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals
Packaging 10 kg, 50 kg, 200 kg

Working concentration

The recommended concentration of the working solution is 3–5%.
The concentration should be maintained within this range and monitored during operation. Increasing the concentrate level on the assumption that “more is better” is not recommended unless there is a specific technological reason.
Excess concentration does not automatically improve MWF performance and may be undesirable for a particular machining process or material.

Suitable machining operations

BIOL ECO can be used for common metal machining operations, including turning, milling, drilling, boring, grinding and tool sharpening.
The actual concentration and operating conditions should be selected with regard to the machining operation, workpiece material and equipment.

Materials that can be machined

BIOL ECO can be used for machining structural and alloy steels, cast iron, aluminium and its alloys, as well as other non-ferrous metals.

BIOL ECO for aluminium

BIOL ECO can be used for machining aluminium and aluminium alloys. In these applications, it is particularly important to keep the working solution within the recommended 3–5% concentration range and not to increase the concentration without a technological need.
If aluminium machining is the main application, BIOL Universal is also worth considering. Based on practical application experience and user feedback, this MWF has performed well in aluminium machining.

When to consider another MWF

BIOL Universal is worth comparing with BIOL ECO when a versatile synthetic MWF is required for different materials and machining operations. Based on practical application experience, it has performed particularly well with aluminium.
BIOL can be considered when a proven synthetic water-miscible MWF is required for typical machining operations with an emphasis on an accessible working-solution cost.
The choice between BIOL products should be based on the workpiece material, machining operation, required concentration and actual performance of the working solution on the specific equipment.

Preparing the working solution

Before filling the system, prepare an aqueous BIOL ECO working solution at a concentration of 3–5%.
Stable MWF operation depends not only on the concentrate-to-water ratio but also on the condition of the system. When changing from another MWF or after extended operation, assess contamination of the tank, piping and other system components.
Do not prepare a more concentrated solution unless required by the machining process.

Operation and maintenance

During operation, MWF concentration may change because of water evaporation, carry-off on workpieces and other operating factors.
The concentration should therefore be checked periodically and corrected when necessary. Adding concentrate without checking the actual condition of the working solution can move it outside the recommended range.
Contamination by tramp oils, metal chips and other process contaminants should also be monitored.

Limitations

BIOL ECO should not be treated as a universal MWF for every metal, machine tool or cutting condition.
Before introducing a new working solution, consider the workpiece material, cutting tool, machining operation, cutting conditions and the design of the MWF supply system.
For aluminium and aluminium alloys, the recommended concentration range should not be exceeded without a specific technological reason.

Storage and safety

Store the concentrate in closed packaging in accordance with the product documentation.
When handling the concentrate and working solutions, use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow industrial hygiene requirements.
The absence of sulfur- and chlorine-containing additives does not remove the need to follow normal safety requirements for industrial metalworking fluids.

When BIOL ECO is a suitable choice

  1. A synthetic water-miscible MWF is required.
  2. A 3–5% working concentration is suitable for the process.
  3. An MWF without sulfur- or chlorine-containing additives is required.
  4. The fluid is intended for common metal machining operations.
  5. The environmental orientation of the formulation is an important selection factor.

FAQ

What is the recommended concentration of BIOL ECO?
The recommended working concentration is 3–5%. Exceeding this range without a technological reason is not recommended.
Can BIOL ECO be used for aluminium?
Yes. BIOL ECO can be used for aluminium and aluminium alloys. It is important to maintain the recommended concentration and avoid unnecessary over-concentration.
Is BIOL ECO specifically an aluminium machining fluid?
No. Aluminium is one of the materials that can be machined with BIOL ECO. The product can also be used with steels, cast iron and other non-ferrous metals.
How does BIOL ECO differ from other BIOL metalworking fluids?
A key feature of BIOL ECO is the environmental orientation of its formulation and the absence of sulfur- and chlorine-containing additives.
Does the concentration need to be monitored during operation?
Yes. The concentration should be checked periodically and adjusted when necessary.
