Description and characteristics

Magnesium oxide is a chemical reagent that is poorly soluble in water, reacts well with various acids, and becomes volatile at a temperature of about 2000C. It has the ability to absorb water vapour and carbon dioxide from the air to form Mg(OH)2 and MgCO3.

Appearance:

Magnesium oxide looks like a white dense powder, and can be loose crystalline. The appearance, properties, and grade of magnesium oxide largely depend on the method by which it was produced. Magnesium oxide can be obtained from magnesium sulfate by decomposition at high temperatures, as well as by firing the heat-resistant minerals dolomite and magnesite, and by firing magnesium chloride.

Packaging, transportation and storage:

Magnesium oxide is packed at the manufacturing plant in paper or polypropylene bags with a liner. Magnesium oxide is transported by rail in covered wagons or by road in covered vehicles. Magnesium oxide is stored in the original packaging in covered warehouses, protected from moisture and well ventilated.
