Phenolphthalein or purgene (alpha-di-(4-oxyphenyl)phthalide, alpha) is the simplest representative of the class of phthaleins, the molecular mass of which is 318.33 a.u.m., is diamond-shaped crystals of white colour with a specific odour (recrystallisation solvent – ethanol). Phenolphthalein has good solubility in water, ethanol and diethyl alcohol. The melting processes of the substance start at 261°C. Addition of alkali to the aqueous solution leads to pink colouring.
