Food additives are special substances of natural or synthetic (artificial) origin that are introduced into products to improve their properties: taste, colour, texture, shelf life or nutritional value. Some of them, like salt or vinegar, have accompanied mankind since ancient times, while others are the result of modern technology.

In the European Union, each authorised additive is given an individual code, the so-called E-number (e.g. E202 for potassium sorbate), which allows transparent identification of its function: preservative, antioxidant, colouring agent, emulsifier or sweetener. This system streamlines the use of additives in the food industry and guarantees consumer safety.

The main types of food additives:

Preservatives E200-E280 (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, sorbic acid, lactic acid, etc.) Used to inhibit the growth of bacteria, moulds and yeasts. Particularly important in the meat and dairy industry where shelf life needs to be extended.

Antioxidants (antioxidants) E300-E399 (ascorbic acid, sodium citrate, etc.) Prevent oxidation of fats, which prevents rancidity of products and preserves their quality. They are actively used in the production of sausages, pates, butter.

Emulsifiers E500-E599 (mono and diglycerides, alginate, lecithin, etc.) Provide a homogeneous consistency of the products, preventing separation and improving texture.

Stabilisers and thickeners E400-E499 (xanthan gum, carrageenan, etc.) Improve the texture, viscosity and homogeneity of the product. Indispensable in the dairy industry (yoghurt, desserts) and confectionery.

Flavour enhancers E600-E699 (monosodium glutamate) Enhances the taste of food products, gives a pleasant flavour.

Dyes E100-E199 (curcumin, tartrazine) Give products an attractive appearance that meets consumer expectations.

Sweeteners E950-E969 (saccharin, aspartame) Used to create a sweet flavour without added sugar, which is especially important for dietary products.

In the modern food industry, the use of food additives has become an integral part of technological processes. They ensure product quality stability, extend shelf life and improve the organoleptic properties of products. Their safety is controlled by international regulations such as EFSA and Codex Alimentarius. Novohim offers a wide range of internationally standardised food additives for various sectors of the food industry.

ATTENTION! The recommended dosages are approximate. For exact use, the manufacturer’s technical documentation should be followed.

The use of food additives requires not only knowledge of their functionality, but also strict adherence to process regulations. Even useful or authorised substances in excessive quantities can change the flavour of a product, reduce its quality or cause undesirable reactions. Even common table salt used in excessive quantities can be a poison. Therefore, food additives should be used wisely and accurately, adhering to the recommended dosages specified in technical documentation or formulations. A professional approach is the key to quality, safety and consumer confidence.

When the cold season arrives, there are more and more situations when we want to get warm or at least be able to warm our hands, feet and other parts of the body. It is for such cases people have invented warmers that can help in this, especially when there is no possibility to stay in a warm room for a long time. For example, for use in field and camping conditions or when performing work associated with long-term stay in the cold, as well as for tourism and fishing. There are several types of heaters: electric, water, chemical or salt. Now in Ukraine especially became popular salt warmers, as their effective work does not depend on the availability of electricity or access to hot water. Salt warmers can be bought now in many online shops, and the video with the title “handmade salt warmers” is gaining a lot of views in social networks.

What is a salt warmer?

A chemical warmer is a reusable salt warmer filled with a concentrated salt solution (sodium acetate), capable of self-heating and releasing a large amount of heat in the process of changing the aggregate state of this salt solution during activation.

Advantages of salt warmers:

Efficient working result is independent of the availability of hot water and electricity

Suitable for multiple use

Holds the set temperature for about 2-3 hours

Mobility (can be carried in pockets or placed under clothes)

Cost-effectiveness.

The salt hand warmer is as universal as possible. It can be put in gloves, in pockets, put under clothes. The chemical hand warmer is small in size and weight, which allows you to use it in various conditions. It does not take up much space in your luggage. In addition, you can even make a salt warmer with your own hands.

How to make a salt warmer?

Handmade salt warmers can be made from sodium acetic acid and distilled water. For the preparation will be suitable as sodium acetate 3-water, and anhydrous.

To begin with, let’s consider the process of preparing salt warmers from sodium acetic acid anhydrous. To do this, we take:

Sodium acetate anhydrous – 1 kg

Distilled water – 660 grams

Cooking vessels (stainless steel) – 2 pcs

Stirring spoon (stainless steel) – 1 pcs

Kitchen scales – 1 pcs

Put the cooking vessel on the scales and weigh it. Then pour 660 g of water and pour in 1kg of sodium acetate anhydrous. All this put on a water bath and start heating on medium heat, stirring constantly. It should be heated to a temperature of 70-80°C or higher. All crystals of sodium acetate should dissolve and the solution should become transparent. If you have heated the solution to more than 90°C and the crystals are not completely dissolved, then you should add some water (up to 5% on average).

Then remove the container with the salt solution from the water bath and weigh it. The weight should be the same as at the beginning of heating, namely 1660 grams without taking into account the weight of the container. Due to the fact that up to 5% of the water is evaporated during the heating process, the weight is likely to decrease. In this case, add the missing amount of water and stir the solution well. If the solution becomes cloudy, heat it again until it is clear.

IMPORTANT! For correct operation of the warmers the solution must be clean (without mechanical impurities), transparent and have the necessary proportion.

The salt solution is poured into special plastic bags (doy-paks), the activator is put in – a metal element which starts self-heating of the warmer when it vibrates.

The process of preparation of warmers from sodium acetic acid 3-water is generally similar. The only exception is that less water is added when heating on a water bath. Namely, about 5% of the total amount of sodium acetate (on average for 1kg of sodium acetate 50-100g of water), depending on the intensity of water evaporation during heating.

How to use a salt warmer

The liquid salt solution in the chemical warmer is in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium. That is, its physicochemical properties remain unchanged under certain isolated conditions. In order to activate the heating pad it is necessary to remove the salt solution from this state of equilibrium. This is done with the help of the activator – spring, coin, stick, etc., which is put in the package with the warmer. It should be bent, clicked, pressed and thus activate the composition of the chemical heating pad.

The activator then becomes the centre of crystallisation and the beginning of the transition of the salt solution from liquid to solid state. This process occurs with the release of a large amount of heat and the heating pad is heated to a temperature of about 50°C.

How long does a salt warmer last? On average, the action of the heating pad lasts 2-3 hours with a gradual decrease in temperature. What can be warmed with a salt heating pad? All parts of the body, it is especially effective in warming frozen hands and feet. In some extreme conditions, such a small heating pad can literally save a person’s limbs, and sometimes even his life.

In order to start the reverse process, the salt heating pad should be heated to room temperature, then wrapped in a cloth or towel and placed in boiling water for 10-20 minutes, it becomes liquid again. After cooling down at room temperature, the heating pad is ready for the next use.

Precautions

Due to the fact that the basis of the salt heating pad is a chemical substance and its use is associated with high temperatures, certain safety precautions should be observed:

To warm sensitive skin areas, the heating pad should be wrapped in a towel or cotton cloth to avoid burns.

Do not use the heating pad on injured or damaged skin.

It is forbidden to use a microwave oven to heat up salt warmers.

Attempting to fold the heating pad in a solid state may cause the package to rupture.

If the contents of the heating pad come into contact with skin and mucous membranes, flush these areas with plenty of water.

When using a salt heating pad for therapeutic purposes, it is necessary to consult a medical specialist.

The warmers should be stored at room temperature, avoid direct sunlight.

From time to time in every living or working space, the question of clearing grease and other blockages from sewer pipes arises. Most often, you can do this task yourself, without the need for specialised services. Such household appliances as a plunger and metal rope can help. However, according to our customers’ surveys, special chemical means for cleaning pipes in the form of: granules, liquids, gels or powders are preferred.

Over time, grease and other degradable and non-degradable deposits build up on the walls of all pipelines. After a few years without cleaning, such a pipeline will lose 40-60% of its capacity. In addition, blockages will occur more and more frequently.

So how to clean the pipe with your own hands?

We suggest using thick rubber gloves and try to pump the clog with a plunger. To do this, pour a small amount of water into the sink or bathtub, above the level of the rubber part of the plunger. Dip the plunger into the water at the drain opening and make 10-20 pumping movements up and down, without pulling it away from the surface.

A metal cable can also break through the clog without the use of additional means, provided that such a tool is available in the household.

If mechanical efforts fail, the next step is chemical treatment.

We offer several options of chemical treatments for pipe cleaning:

1.Caustic soda (Mole, Mr Muscle, etc.)

One of the most effective ways to clean drains. Sodium causticum is an alkali, 100% dissolves all organic deposits that most often cause blockages. Great at removing grease. It has a small price.

Theoretically, caustic soda can be used in dry form and in the form of a solution. However, the use in the form of a ready solution is safer for plastic pipes. Since the reaction of caustic soda with water occurs with the release of heat up to 60-70°C and gas. Therefore, for the safety of plastic pipes and joints, we recommend pouring a ready-made solution of caustic soda into the drain. In any case, caustic soda should be used with caution in case of plastic elements in the pipeline.

Instructions for use of caustic soda.

Pour 1-3 litres of boiling water down the drain to soften deposits.

To prepare a solution of caustic soda for cleaning the sewerage system it is necessary to mix caustic with water in a proportion of 1:2 (can vary depending on the intensity of the clog).
IMPORTANT: When preparing the solution, a violent reaction occurs with the release of heat and bubbling of the liquid. It is necessary to use heat-resistant containers made of dense plastic or metal with a volume reserve and personal protective equipment for skin and mucous membranes (gloves, goggles, rubber apron). In case of skin contact wash with plenty of water.

After the end of the reaction the solution is poured into the drain and given time to stand depending on the degree of clogging. Then turn on the water tap and let it drain for 5-10 min.

The exposure time may vary depending on the degree of blockage and the pipe material.

In addition, to increase the cleaning power of the caustic soda solution, dish detergent can be added to its composition. Use 5ml of detergent per 3 litres of solution.

2. Hydrochloric acid13%

It is used for clearing severe blockages, including the removal of sponges, rags and other foreign bodies in pipes. A good way to remove hair, paper, wool, lime scale.

Instructions for use:

Hydrochloric acid 13% mixed with technical liquid soap with surfactant content. Allow to stand for 5-20 min and rinse. Recommended proportion: for 10 litres of hydrochloric acid 13% add 500ml of technical liquid soap.

3. Soda and acetic acid

Mix 100-200g of baking soda with half a cup of 6-9% acetic acid

Pour the mortar into the drain hole

After 2 hours, rinse with a stream of hot water.

4. Baking soda and citric acid

Dissolve 100g of baking soda and 100g of citric acid in 1 litre of hot water. Pour the solution into the drain, soak for 2 hours and rinse with hot water.

5. Sodium hypochlorite

Included in Domestos gel pipe cleaner. It is recommended to pour in the amount of 250ml and keep for 10-15min. Then rinse the drain with hot water. In case of severe clogs it is recommended to increase the dose three times and the exposure time up to 2 hours.

IMPORTANT! For plastic pipework, hot water must not exceed +80°C.

How to clean a drain (cesspool)?

This is a topical question for an autonomous sewerage system. Caustic soda in the proportion of 1:3 – 1:4 will also help to cope with this task. On average, 2kg of caustic soda is diluted in 7-8 litres of water. And this solution is poured into the cesspool. If necessary, repeat the procedure.

It is recommended to carry out such cleaning once in half a year for the purpose of prevention.

Precautions: When working with caustic soda it is obligatory to use personal protective equipment (goggles, rubber gloves and apron). Use heat-resistant plastic or metal containers with a volume reserve. Avoid contact of the product with skin and mucous membranes, it may cause chemical burns.

How to make paraffin candles with your own hands – a topic that will definitely be useful in actual conditions. Paraffin candles in Ukraine now are real helpers that can really help to survive.

Several types of candles can be made. We want to share recipes for making ordinary candles from paraffin and stearin, as well as trench candles, which have their own useful advantages in extreme conditions.

How to make candles at home from paraffin and stearin.

To make paraffin and stearin candles, we will need the following materials:

Saucepan or kettle for melting wax

Paraffin

Stearin (gives the candle plasticity)

Silicone grease

Wick

Mould

Measure paraffin and stearin in the proportion of 4:1. Melt all the ingredients in a water bath. Grease the mould with silicone grease for better separation of the finished candle from the surface of the mould. Put a wick on the bottom of the mould. In the absence of a ready-made wick, it can also be made of dense cotton thread, jute rope, soaked in paraffin and dried for 24 hours. After preparing the wick, pour the mould with a melted mixture of paraffin and stearin. Wait for 1 hour until the composition hardens and remove from the mould. That’s all, our paraffin candle made at home is ready.

What is a trench candle? How to make trench candles with your own hands.

Trench candles are indispensable items for survival in cold and difficult conditions. These candles can be used to keep warm, dry clothes, heat or even cook food, heat water, and light up a room.

Such a candle, depending on the size can burn from 3 to 7-8 hours. How to make trench candles with your own hands? To make a trench candle we will need:

Paraffin or any leftover candles

Saucepan or kettle to melt the paraffin wax

A tin can (ideally the size of a pea or sweetcorn tin)

Corrugated cardboard

Ruler

Knife

Instructions for making trench candles.

Take a tin can and remove the paper label. We can also cut the sharp edge with a hammer for safety reasons. Then put paraffin or finely chopped remnants of candles to warm on a water bath until completely dissolved. At this time, prepare strips of corrugated cardboard, the height of which is 3-4 mm less than the height of the tin can. Cut them across the corrugation. Then tightly twist the cardboard strips according to the volume of the tin can and insert them inside. We also make a bendy strip with a height higher than the height of the cardboard snail. You can insert several such strips.

When the paraffin is melted, pour it into the tin сan with cardboard. You can fill the jar 2-3 times, so the trench candle will burn longer.

When using any candles, remember about fire safety:

Do not leave paraffin candles near flammable objects.

Use special fixings when installing candles or candle holders, fix the candle strictly vertically.

Do not hold burning candles in your hands.

If you light several candles at once, try to place them 10cm apart to avoid deformation.

When placing candles, avoid places near doors and windows to avoid draughts.

Do not leave candles unattended, especially indoors where there are children or animals.
