We, as manufacturers of FRREEZLIGHT antifreezes and coolants, often face the question of what kind of coolant should be bought for solar systems or solar collectors. Undoubtedly, when choosing any coolant, you should adhere to the following principles:< /strong>

Compliance of the coolant with the technical characteristics of the heating or cooling system

Security

Longevity

Anti-corrosion

Antiscale

Temperatures

Verified manufacturer.

These are general rules when choosing any coolant or coolant. However, when choosing a coolant for a solar system and, in general, when buying it, it is necessary to take into account a little more technical features of the latter.
First of all, when choosing a solar installation, it is recommended to check what protection against boiling and excessive pressure is in this installation. Perhaps this system is equipped with a controller. Namely, the overpressure and temperature valve. The presence of such a KIDT controller will provide you with a “quiet life”, as it provides control of the pressure and temperature of the coolant in the system, preventing overheating. Such a valve automatically relieves excess pressure (max allowable pressure in the system (5 atm.) and discharges hot water (steam) when the temperature reaches 98°C.
Also, to increase the safety of the system, expansion membrane tanks, a safety valve for steam release or modern mechanisms such as “AuroStep” can be used. All these methods will help to avoid stagnation in the system, its unwanted breakdowns and, moreover, increase the stability and increase the durability of the coolant.
It is very important to correctly design and calculate the operating conditions of the solar battery system and take into account climatic features. Indeed, one of the advantages of modern solar systems is their all-weather operation, therefore, not water is used as a heat carrier for such systems, but a special non-freezing liquid based on glycol with a high boiling point.

Best to use propylene glycol based heat transfer agent</ a> and distilled water, which does not contain nitrites, phosphates and borates and is safe for humans and the environment. The proportion of propylene glycol and water for such a coolant, recommended by manufacturers of solar installations, averages 45% glycol and 55% water.

The coolant of our production FREEZLIGHT -32°C for solar systems is a safe non-freezing liquid based on propylene glycol. In addition, this coolant contains < strong>distilled water, European quality anti-corrosion and anti-foam additives and dye.< /span>

Heat media for solar panels tm FREEZLIGHT fully meet the requirements DIN 4757 part 3 for solar systems, their production is approved by the international certificate ISO 9001.

I would like to pay attention to the issue of stagnation and, as a result, boiling of non-freezing liquid in the solar system.

So what is the boiling point of the coolant?

There is a rule – the higher the pressure in the system, the higher the boiling point of the coolant becomes.

Given that the maximum allowable pressure is up to 5 atmospheres, we calculate:
The boiling point of the coolant at a pressure of 2 atmospheres is 126-128˚С. At a pressure of 3 atmospheres, the coolant will boil at a temperature of about 140˚С, and at 4 atmospheres – about 150˚С.

The benefits of using “FREEZLIGHT” for solar systems:

Does not freeze unlike water at low temperatures

Works well in stagnation.

The concentrate withstands temperatures ranging from -60 to +188-190°С

Protection against scale and corrosion

Safe for all system elements, including rubber seals

Safety for humans and the environment

Low viscosity and easy to overclock

5 year quality guarantee

FREEZLIGHT anti-freeze fluid with a package of anti-corrosion additives from the best European manufacturers – 100% protection against freezing and corrosion in the system.

However, the heating fluid in the solar system should be checked regularly. Typically, manufacturers of solar installations recommend doing this once a year. Such an event is necessary to check and maintain the declared temperature of the coolant, to study the stability of its physical and chemical properties, and, accordingly, the possibility of further use.
We, as manufacturers of heat transfer fluids, do such an analysis in our production laboratory for our customers absolutely free of charge. You can also conduct mini analytics yourself. For this you need:

drain a small amount of coolant from the system (1-1.5l)

check its organoleptic properties (color, consistency, uniformity)

measure the pH of the solution using indicator strips (pH must be at least 7 units)

If the quality of the coolant does not meet the norm, it should be replaced.

Antifreeze is an indispensable tool for all cooling systems that are equipped with an internal combustion engine. Undoubtedly, there are antifreezes (heat carriers) for heating and air conditioning systems, you can learn more about them in the Heat carriers section or in our blog article How to choose a heat carrier for heating. In this article we want to tell you more about antifreeze for a car: Which antifreeze is better and how they differ.
The word “antifreeze” itself means coolant and this, in fact, is the main purpose of these liquids. However, is everything so clear and how to choose a high-quality antifreeze for a car?

First of all, you need to know that in Europe there is a classification of antifreezes developed by Volkswagen based on antifreeze and type of additives:

G-11 – green, blue antifreeze
G-12 – red antifreeze
G-13 – yellow, orange or purple antifreeze

However, we do not recommend choosing antifreeze by one color. Because, if in Europe they adhere to this scheme, then American antifreeze manufacturers paint their product without observing it at all. Therefore, the main selection criterion is still the class of additives, namely G-11, G-12 or G-13.

Which antifreeze is best for cars? Let’s describe each type separately.

1. Antifreezes G-11

For European manufacturers, this is an antifreeze liquid of green or blue color based on ethylene glycol. With a package of anti-corrosion and anti-foam additives. Contains organic components and silicates. Forms a protective film on the washed surfaces. However, it is short-lived and crumbles pretty soon. It is a fairly budget option for antifreeze. The service life of such antifreeze is 2-3 years.

2. Antifreezes G-12

Ethylene glycol red carboxylate antifreeze. It has a carboxylate formula of additives – based on carboxylic organic acids. It does not contain borates, phosphates and silicates. Carboxylate additives act only in places where corrosion occurs and, unlike inorganic additives, do not form a protective film over the entire surface. Maintain high thermal conductivity and stability of antifreeze properties. Guaranteed protection against cavitation corrosion, scale formation and deposits in the car cooling system. Protect the engine from overheating. The cost of red antifreeze is in the middle price category. The service life of g12 carboxylate antifreeze is more than 5 years.
Follow the link and order FREEZLIGHT -40°C carboxylate antifreeze and FREEZLIGHT antifreeze red concentrate directly on the website

3. Antifreezes G12+

Similar to G-12, but may contain phosphates. Which helps to improve the quality of antifreeze through water softening.
Follow the link and order FREEZLIGHT -40°C carboxylate antifreeze and FREEZLIGHT antifreeze red concentrate directly on the website

4. Antifreeze liquids G-13

Anti-freeze liquids based on propylene glycol with hybrid (lobrid) additives. Eco-friendly and safe for humans. They decompose faster in nature. However, compared to other antifreezes, it has the highest price. The composition of the additives of such antifreeze includes organic components, may contain silicates. Service life 5-10 years.

5. TOSOL

A classic antifreeze for early production cars based on monoethylene glycol with traditional inorganic additives. Most often it is blue in color and is designed for temperatures up to -40 ° C or -50 ° C. However, it no longer meets all international standards of the automotive industry and loses much in terms of physical and chemical properties to modern antifreezes.

Can antifreezes be mixed?

First of all, if you need to mix two antifreezes, the reference should be to the composition of their additives. So, only antifreezes of the same composition and class of additives are allowed to be mixed.
For example, it is not recommended to pour an antifreeze liquid with inorganic additives into carboxylates. As a result of their chemical combination, antifreeze can precipitate in the form of flakes and clog the entire cooling system.

We do not recommend salt heat transfer fluids for use due to a significant corrosive effect on heating system materials.

1. Propylene glycol based heat transfer agent

It is an absolutely safe substance for humans and the environment. In addition, it is a universal heating fluid. Namely, it can be used in:

heating systems of any kind and with different types of boiler

solar panel systems

chillers

air conditioning systems

refrigeration

combustion engines

Operation peculiarities of propylene glycol coolant:

It has the lowest density due to which it practically does not need a power reserve of pumping equipment. The coolant is easily dispersed through the pipes even after a long downtime of the system.

It has a low freezing point, does not expand like water.

It has strong thermal conductivity, stability at high and low temperatures.

Due to its physical and chemical characteristics it is considered to be a universal coolant, which can be recommended for all engineering heating and cooling systems.

Environmentally safe.

It has a low freezing point, strong thermal conductivity, high and low temperature stability and low viscosity. These properties and environmental safety make propylene glycol-based coolant number 1 in the rating of heating fluids.

2. Heat carrier based on glycerin

Like propylene glycol coolant, it is an environmentally friendly product. It is worth noting that glycerin is the first substance that began to be used in the production of antifreeze, about 100 years ago. And only in the mid-30s of the XX century, glycols and their mixtures began to be used as antifreeze liquids. However, there are some features due to which the glycerin-based coolant may be limited in use.

Operation peculiarities of glycerine coolant:

Glycerine-based heat transfer fluid has the highest density compared to propylene glycol and ethylene glycol heat transfer fluids. This property makes it much more difficult for glycerine coolant to move through the pipework, especially if the system has not been in operation for some time.

In addition, to accelerate the glycerine-based coolant through the system, a pump with a power reserve 3-5 times greater than for water is required.

The basis of the coolant – glycerine, due to its physical and chemical properties, is not able to withstand high temperatures of more than 90 ° C for a long time. In case of overheating, glycerine starts to decompose and release a toxic compound acrolein, which will require immediate replacement of such coolant.

For correct operation, glycerine-based coolant can be recommended only for gas boilers, where the temperature is stable and does not rise above 60-70°C.
For example, in an electric boiler with heating elements the temperature can rise up to 300°C, and in a solid fuel boiler there are sharp temperature spikes on the walls of the heat exchanger as the fuel is added, which is also destructive for glycerine coolant.

3. Heat transfer fluid based on ethylene glycol

Effective glycol with a low freezing point and physical and chemical properties similar to propylene glycol. However, unlike propylene glycol, its vapors are quite toxic to humans. It is this fact that limits the scope of ethylene glycol in heating systems. Where can I use ethylene glycol based antifreeze:

in single circuit closed heating systems

in cooling systems

in combustion engine cooling systems

Peculiarities of ethylene glycol coolant operation:

Toxicity of ethylene glycol vapours limits the possibility of its operation in residential premises and open heating systems.

Relatively easy to disperse through the system, does not require heavy-duty pumping equipment.

It has a low freezing point, does not expand like water.

It has strong thermal conductivity, stability at high and low temperatures.

Note that ethylene glycol is not approved for use in food processing plants.
In case of accidental leakage of such a coolant, urgent measures must be taken to eliminate the breakdown. When working with ethylene glycol, personal protective equipment is used: rubber gloves, an apron, goggles and a respirator.

Sometimes we are asked what is the best coolant to use in the case of natural circulation of liquid in the heating system, the answer is propylene glycol-based coolant. Because it has the lowest density among coolants based on ethylene glycol and glycerine. And it is thanks to this advantage of lightness that the propylene glycol-based heating fluid, as a result of hydrostatic head, will be better distributed and work correctly in the system even in the absence of power supply.

cooling systems

It can also be used in open loop systems and at food enterprises.

Properties of an aqueous solution of propylene glycol from Novokhim Company:

DOES NOT FREEZE, unlike water

SAFE for humans and the environment

Corresponds to the specified crystallization temperature (according to the table)

This is a ready-made liquid, does not require additional dilution

Good for system materials and rubber seals

IMPORTANT! One of the most important components of the solution, in addition to distilled water, are additives.

It follows from the above that this solution, produced under industrial conditions with the addition of all necessary components, including a combined additive package, will be more durable, stable and safe in operation.

The density and freezing of a solution directly depend on its concentration. Below is a table for clarity.

Propylene glycol solution will cost slightly more than ethylene glycol solution. However, the safety and environmental friendliness of its use is worth it. Moreover, the use of ethylene glycol solutions is recommended only for heating systems with a closed expansion tank.

During operation, especially if water was previously used in the system, some features and characteristics of the propylene glycol solution should be taken into account:< /span>

The viscosity of a glycol solution is 2-3 times higher than that of water. This means that the movement of the aqueous solution through the pipes of the system will be normal if a powerful circulation pump is installed. With a power reserve of 10-15%.

The coefficient of thermal expansion of propylene glycol is greater than that of water. Therefore, it is rational to use an expansion tank with an increased volume.

Prevent the solution from boiling to avoid irreversible changes in properties.

The heat capacity of aqueous solutions of propylene glycol is 10-15% lower than that of water, which somewhat reduces heat transfer.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this substance when used and why is it popular to buy a solution of ethylene glycol in water?

First of all, it is worth mentioning the main properties of the ethylene glycol solution. Namely:

Ethylene glycol solution has a lower freezing point than concentrate

DOES NOT FREEZE, unlike water, in the system

Can only be used in closed loop systems due to fumes toxicity

Has a lower viscosity than concentrated ethylene glycol

It is a ready-made liquid for heating / cooling systems at a given temperature (does not require additional dilution)</ li>

As you can see, there are clear advantages to using this solution. It can also be added to the pluses that the price of an ethylene glycol solution is much lower compared to an aqueous solution of propylene glycol, for example. But there are also downsides.

The choice of an aqueous glycol solution is best done individually, based on from:

the type and purpose of the room for the operation of the heat carrier/cooler

type and technological features of the equipment or heating system

budget

type of fluid previously poured into the system

temperature setting

other features

Follow the link and read all the characteristics of the propylene glycol solution

For individual selection and calculation of the necessary liquid in the system heating or cooling please contact our technical specialists.

Click on the link and see all options for heating fluids based on propylene glycol, glycerin and ethylene glycol

The freezing point of pure ethylene glycol is -13C°. The preparation of an aqueous solution from the concentrate makes it possible to obtain lower freezing temperatures of the substance. For example, for various weather conditions and features of work, an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol is produced with a concentration of 30.35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 65%. However, even when it freezes, it does not solidify or expand like water. It thickens and slightly increases in volume.

IMPORTANT! Diluting more than 50% of ethylene glycol with water significantly reduces the performance of the finished heat transfer fluid/refrigerant.

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt; In addition, additives play an important role, which are simply necessary for the durable and safe operation of aqueous glycol solutions.
Below is a table showing the dependence of crystallization of ethylene glycol solutions on their concentration.

Table 1
Freezing point of aqueous solutions of ethylene glycol depending on concentration.

During operation, it should be taken into account that its thermophysical properties are different from those of water. Namely:

The viscosity of a glycol solution is 1.5-2 times higher than the viscosity of water. This means that the movement of the aqueous solution through the pipes of the system will be normal if a powerful circulation pump is installed. With a power reserve of 10-15%.

Ethylene glycol solution has a higher thermal expansion coefficient than water. Therefore, it is rational to use an expansion tank with an increased volume.

Ethylene glycol fumes are toxic, which means it can only be used in single-loop closed systems.

The boiling point of an ethylene glycol solution can range from 101.1C° at 10% solution to 137.2 at 90%. As you can see, depending on the concentration. The bottom line is to prevent the solution from boiling in the system, as this will irreversibly affect the possibility of its further use.

The heat capacity of an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol is 15-17% lower than that of water, which somewhat reduces heat transfer.

It is important to remind you that if the system is depressurized and this substance leaks, it is urgent to repair the damage and replace the necessary elements.

When when working with ethylene glycol concentrate or its solution, it is necessary to use personal protective equipment – a respirator, rubber gloves and goggles. Trust your equipment and safety to professionals!

How a heating system is flushed.

Before describing the flushing process itself, it should be said when the heating system is flushed. The above normative document recommends flushing the heating system annually, after the end of the heating season. This is due to the fact that it is after the heating season that deposits and scale on the inner walls of the system become looser. Therefore, they are much easier and faster to remove.

Although these regulations apply to systems that are charged with ordinary water, it is recommended to follow them when filling systems with glycol coolants or replacing the coolant.</ em>

We also recommend flushing the heating system and checking the reliability of pipeline connections when replacing water in the heating system at glycol coolant</ a>. Because the anti-corrosion additives that are in the coolant can direct their effect on the dissolution of deposits and their inhibition in the system. Which, in turn, will lead to rapid deterioration of the coolant and incorrect operation of the entire system.

Benefits of flushing a heating system:

system is cleaned of deposits, scale, corrosion and other sludge

pipeline throughput increases

improves circulation in the system

reduced electricity or gas consumption

30% reduction in thermal system efficiency

significantly increases the service life of the system and pumping equipment

saving material resources by increasing the heat transfer of the heating system.

1mm of deposits and sludge in the system reduces heat transfer by up to 25%. This can be compared to covering pipelines with thermal insulation material.

Ways to flush the heating system.

There are several technological ways to flush the heating system. These include: chemical or biological washing, hydrodynamic and pneumohydropulse. The choice of flushing technology depends on the modification and material of the heating equipment, as well as the pipeline. Hydrodynamic flushing is not recommended to be done by yourself. in order to avoid gusts and equipment failure, this should be done by specially trained people. You will also need special equipment.

The benefits of chemical (biological) flushing system:

Economy

The ability to do it yourself

No additional hardware required

Does not require dismantling the system

Efficiency and speed of the cleaning process

When choosing a product for chemical flushing of the heating system, you should carefully check its composition and compatibility with the materials of your heating system.

Company Novokhim offers to buy chemical scale remover (anti-rust) based on glyoxal. Anti-rust is non-corrosive and can be recommended for a variety of metals including aluminium, copper and brass.

Anti-rust does not damage system gaskets and seals. In addition, it forms a protective layer on the treated surface, which prevents the re-formation of deposits on the inner walls of the pipeline system. The spent solution, depending on the degree of contamination, can be reused or washed down the drain. Does not require special disposal.

IMPORTANT!!! Carry out flushing of thermal equipment before replacing the coolant or when switching from water to glycol coolant for heating system .
After applying a chemical flush, thoroughly flush the system with water to completely remove chemicals.
Also, do not forget to check the heating system for leaks after installing the system, repairing the pipeline section, replacing the coolant, before and after the heating season.
Regularly maintaining a heating system in excellent working order is much more expedient and economical than spending money on periodic repairs and troubleshooting.

You can answer these questions yourself after reading this article.

We will describe the advantages and disadvantages of each of these materials and the features of their application.

General position

It is known that the installation of a heating system must be carried out by competent plumbers with a special education who are familiar with the requirements of these rules SN 478-80 and strictly comply with them. This is a guarantee of high-quality and long-term operation of the heating system.

But as often happens, to save money or for some other reason, people hire “imposter” plumbers who don’t even know What is SNIP. And then, when the moment of hydrostatic tests comes up (well, at least they are done), leaks are detected, the system is not completely warmed up. And the search for reasons begins: poor coolant, poor-quality threads, etc., but let’s not talk about sad things.

Water is a good coolant with the highest thermal conductivity. However, systems with two-inch pipes, cast-iron batteries with the so-called “self-flowing” circulation are a thing of the past. There were no filter elements. Also, with such a pipe diameter, no one thought about some kind of dirt inside the system and about deposits. The fuel was relatively cheap and the main task was to warm up the system well. But now it is not economical.

Modern heating systems are more economical and versatile. In one system, both a solid fuel boiler and an electric boiler or a gas boiler can be connected. And the distribution of the coolant can be simultaneously carried out to the radiators and the underfloor heating system. These heating systems operate under pressure, which is provided by the pump. Installation of such systems should only be carried out by professionals.

A linen strand impregnated with red lead or white mixed with drying oil should be used as a sealant for threaded connections. Moreover, in high-temperature systems, an asbestos strand is used along with linen impregnated with graphite mixed with drying oil.

Modern heating systems have smaller pipe diameters, distribution blocks, and filters. And no matter what you fill your system with, be it coolant or water, MANDATORY it is necessary to flush the system from dust that is in pipes and various fittings after production and storage. From slag and scale and from conservation oil compositions, which should be used to treat components in boilers and distribution blocks.

UNWANTED use of water in the heating system described above. This is due to the fact that oxidation processes will necessarily occur. After all, we have a solid fuel boiler made of steel or cast iron, a gas boiler or an electric boiler will definitely have copper elements, and our modern aesthetic aluminum batteries. Everything corrodes with water. Moreover, the presence of such different metal elements in one system will necessarily lead to the formation of galvanic processes. In simple terms, the corrosion of metals will accelerate.

Well, the biggest drawback of water is its freezing temperature. No one is immune from power or gas outages. And if it’s a country house that is visited only on weekends to escape from the bustle of the city. Also uneconomical heat industrial premises on weekends or holidays. Water freezes already from 0 degrees. As a result, expanding, it breaks pipes and radiators. Thus, disabling the heating system for a long time, not to mention subsequent financial costs.

All this can be avoided by using low temperature coolant. It also has a drawback – it costs money.

<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino , serif; font-size: 12pt;"\u003e When choosing a coolant for a heating system, it is advisable to purchase it from a reliable manufacturer. It is necessary to obtain guarantees, clarify the composition, temperature conditions and technical characteristics. In the store, and even more so in the market, it is unlikely that you can get reliable information.

Non-freezing coolant for heating systems has high fluidity, so special attention should be paid installation of the system and the preparation (flushing) described above before filling. After all, it is impossible to drain it like water and fill it with another, you will have to make a purchase again. When installing the system, in order to exclude leaks, heat-resistant silicone and a special Teflon thread are used. Do not be stingy and require plumbers to use materials designed to work with the coolant.

We must not forget about the pump that supplies the coolant through the system, its capacity should be 30% more than the calculated one. Heat transfer fluids have a higher density and viscosity than water.

Where can I buy heat transfer fluid for heating?

High-quality heat transfer fluids manufactured by AO KHIMPROM (Kharkiv) are designed for any heating systems. They are used in systems with solid fuel boilers, gas and electric. Quality assurance.

Heat media are used in systems of private houses, food enterprises, as well as in chiller and boiler systems. Thanks to many years of experience, technologies with the use of food anti-corrosion additives have been developed.

The coolant is safe to use, non-toxic to humans and animals. The warranty period for this coolant is 5 years, but after this period it should not be disposed of. The manufacturer, if necessary, will test it and give recommendations for adjusting the composition. Do not mix with heat transfer fluids from other manufacturers.

The coolant is not combustible. It is recommended to store in a place protected from the sun at positive temperatures.

The choice is yours, Good luck.
